Amanda was born on January 11, 1972, in New York City. Her father was a lawyer and she went to Columbia University to study history, not really thinking about a professional acting career. Once there a drama professor saw the raw talent and recommended her to audition
for acting teacher Uta Hagen, under whom she later went on to study over a four-year period. During this learning period she acted in the off-Broadway revival 'Awake and Sing'.
